Image
It is no longer news that David Adeleke, aka ‘Davido’, has been the talk of the town for sometime now. The HKN boss has taken his career a notch higher by signing a deal with Sony BMG Music. The 23-year-old millionaire announced this news himself on his twitter handle on Thursday. Davido He tweeted “to all those that doubted me, its a done deal! First African artist to sign a global record deal!! My story is just starting!! My mother is smiling in heaven right now!! Sony Music Entertainment!! On the other hand, reactions have begun to trail his announcement. Some people are happy for the young and enterprising artiste while some feel very pessimistic about this development. Just because Champagne is now ‘affordable’doesn’t make it common!

Champagne’ used to be a really seductive word a few decades back. You didn’t have to say it in a sultry French accent for it to convey a word of sophistication, glamour and wealth. Jerry, my friend’s British husband really loves the stuff. According to him: “It sashays off the tongue like a yacht gliding into Monte Carlo harbour.” At least it used to. But something has gone seriously wrong. Nowadays, you’re more likely to hear the word yelled across various night clubs, demanded by casually dressed ‘celebs’, and celebs-wanabes looking more like  recalcitrant youths. Sadly to say, champagne “ain’t posh no more”. In certain circles, the doubt has been creeping in for some time. For old school snobs, the sophistication began to wane when supermarkets and ‘Oke-arin’ and Apongbon stalls began stock-pilling crates of the stuff next to locally brewed spirits and cut-price fizz drinks. Early last year, pictures emerged in most British tabloids when pictures emerged of race-goers at the Chelt

The group called the Sheriff's Office for help, and when the driver of the car heard them calling law enforcement, he began shooting, authorities say. The Samaritans ran, but one was shot. That's when, according to the Sheriff's Office, the driver, Marvin Lee (pictured above), approached and continued firing on the downed victim. According to the authorities Lee appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The suspect returned to the vehicle and wouldn't exit. A tactical team responded with an armored vehicle. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly banned star player Cristiano Ronaldo from traveling to Morocco to see best friend Badr Hari.According to a report by El Espanyol, transcribed by Spanish paper Sport, Perez banned Cristiano Ronaldo from his Morocco trips due to his poor form, weary that the player could lose form due to exhaustion and fatigue from his frequent travels. Some times he flies in with his private jet four times a week to Morocco with some media outlets suggesting a gay relationship between the pair. Google to pay £130m to Britain in back taxes

Technology giant Google is to pay £130 million ($185.4 million, 172 million euros) in back taxes to Britain following a government inquiry into its tax arrangements, a company spokeswoman said Friday. It follows a six-year probe by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs in response to controversy over low taxes paid by multinational corporations which operate in Britain but have headquarters elsewhere. “We have agreed with HMRC a new approach for our UK taxes and will pay £130 million, covering taxes since 2005,” a Google spokeswoman said. “The way multinational companies are taxed has been debated for many years and the international tax system is changing as a result. This settlement reflects that shift.” In future, Google will pay taxes in Britain according to revenue from advertisers based in Britain, something that “reflects the size and scope of our UK business”, the spokeswoman said. The BBC reported that Google would now register a greater proportion of its sales activity in B

South African Offers Study Grants For Virgin Girls

A South African region on Friday said it had launched a new grant scheme for girls who remain virgins throughout the course of their university studies, triggering outrage among rights groups. The bursary offered in Uthukela,in the southeast of the country near Durban city, is the brainchild of  municipality’s female mayor Dudu Mazibujo. News of the grant scheme sent shockwaves among civil society groups, with one women’s association branding it unconstitutional. “The bursaries are for young girls who are still virgins,” municipality spokesman Jabulani Mkhonza told AFP. “It’s a new category which the mayor has introduced this year,” he said, adding that the goal is to encourage “young girls to keep themselves pure and inactive from sexual activity and focus on their studies.” Beneficiaries of the grant will be subjected to regular virginity tests, he added. “Those children who have been awarded bursaries will be checked whenever they come back for holidays. The bursary will be ta

Someone called 911 over kids playing basketball, see how this cop responded (photos)

Image
For all the negative headlines surrounding police officers and community policing these days, it’s seriously refreshing when a video like this comes along and allows us to restore a little bit of faith in humanity. Somebody in Gainesville, Florida wasted the time of the police by calling them for a noise complaint about kids playing basketball in the street recently, and the responding officer handled the call in the best way possible. The person who called in the complaint must have been quite distraught when the officer showed up and instead of shutting down the kids’ fun, joined in on the action, balling up with the them for about 10 minutes. In fact, even more kids came outside to play in the time that the cop was hanging around. Talk about your all-time backfires! Eventually, the cop bows out and heads back to his cruiser, but not before lowering the rim and throwing down a dunk on the neighborhood kids. As he’s leaving, he asks the kids if they’re going to be playing around

Blackface - Wizkid Stole ‘Ojuelegba’ From Me

Image
Recall days back, we reported that Blackface Naija, called Starboy boss, Wizkid out in his new song, ‘Killa,’ well today, he has finally explained the story behind the whole allegation. According to Blackface, who spoe with Saturday Beats, he said Wizkid stole the hit song, ‘Ojuelegba’ from him.   I never really wanted to talk about it all this while but after people started checking out my new song,  Killa,  many felt Blackface sounded like Wizkid, which I didn’t like. If you check properly, you would realise that Wizkid’s hit,  Ojuelegba,  sounds exactly the same as the track 13 on my dancehall album released as far back as 2010. You need to listen to that album to know what I am talking about. The song is so similar that I think it shouldn’t be that way. Well, in  Killa , I sang that they tried to copy my melody, and the bloggers got a hint of the gist and put their reports out. What I said is the truth and I am going to get to the root of this matter because I deser

Girl misuses a bath oil and turns bright pink (photos)

Image
An embarrassing misuse of a Lush product has left one girl pink in the face - and everywhere else. While Abi Shenton believed she was properly using a Lush oil in the bath, she was actually dyeing her skin a very bright pink. "The product used was called 'Razzle Dazzle' and it is not a bath bomb," Shenton told Pretty 52. "The correct procedure is that you are supposed to dilute it into water but I thought it was a soap and rubbed it all over my body and face... 3 days and several baths later I am no longer pink!" She was bright pink for three whole days. She tweeted about the ordeal to LUSH from a private account. According to  Cosmopolitan , her tweet said: "Hi! @lushcosmetics, just a quick question, are your products supposed to stain the human skin fluorescent pink?" LUSH responded back adorably with a "Yikes!" and a heart. Luckily, she finally was able to get some help to return back to her regular skin color. "A v

Nigeria Must Do More For Chibok Girls, Others - UN

UN human rights experts on Friday urged Nigeria to increase its efforts to help women and children after they have been freed from captivity by Boko Haram in the country’s conflict-riven northeast. After a five-day visit to the region, three special rapporteurs said there was an “urgent and pressing need for effective measures to address stigma, ostracism and rejection of women and children” as a result of their captivity. Boko Haram has used the kidnap of women and young girls as well as the forced conscription of men and boys as a tactic throughout the conflict, which is now in its seventh year. The most high-profile abduction was of more than 200 girls from their school in the northeastern town of Chibok in April 2014, which caused global outrage. But human rights groups have said thousands of others have been seized in recent years, forced into marriage with Islamist fighters and subject to physical and psychological abuse. FG resorts to Islamic Bond to fund budget

As the pressure on federal revenue mounts following steady decline in oil revenue, the Federal Government would be resorting to a Sukuk Bond for funding the widening budget deficit. Sukuk is a financial certificate, similar to the traditional government bond, but complies with Sharia, Islamic religious law. The Debt Management Office, DMO, and Securities and Exchange Commission, SEC, are collaborating in an effort to issue the Nigerian sovereign Islamic bonds this year. Details of the expected revenue from the bond is not yet disclosed but officials said they expect significant bridging of the 2016 budget deficit which has exceeded the initial N2.2 trillion estimate. According to DMO “issuing a sovereign Sukuk will attract significant amounts of affordable capital from the Gulf countries and other established Islamic markets around the world into Nigeria.” Third country to issue Sukuk in W-Africa Though Nigeria would be the third West African country to issue Sukuk after Senegal

Toyin Saraki seeks end to preventable stillbirths

Image
The Founder-President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), Mrs. Toyin Saraki, has called for stillbirths to be taken out of the shadows of healthcare – removing the cultural stigmas that have made it an invisible death and an invisible grief for mothers suffering the devastating loss of their children. She disclosed this during the global launch of the Lancet ‘Ending Preventable Stillbirths’ Series that took place at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on Tuesday, While research has indicated that stillbirths account for almost 2.6 million deaths annually worldwide, 75% of these deaths take place in sub-Saharan African and South Asia. Currently, Nigeria has the world’s second highest estimated stillbirth rate, with 42.9 stillbirths per 1,000 total births. Moreover, with a 1.3% annual rate of progress in reducing stillbirths between years 2000 and 2015, Nigeria ranks 123rd of 159 in the world for progress on stillbirths reduction. NNPC shuts down Kaduna, Port Harcourt refineries over pipeline vandalism

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Wednesday, said it had shut two refineries in the southern city of Port Harcourt and Kaduna in the north because sabotage to crude pipelines. The plants were shut on Sunday because of “breaches” to the Bonny-Okrika supply line to Port Harcourt and the Escravos-Warri pipeline to Kaduna, the company said in an emailed statement. Nigeria’s minister of power Babatunde Fashola said on Tuesday the country was losing some $2.3 million (2.1 million euros) a day to attacks on gas facilities and lost electricity production. The military said separately it would no longer tolerate the sabotage and blamed it on “criminal elements who are bent on destroying the nation’s strategic assets”. Supporters of former Niger Delta militant Government Ekpemupolo, also known as “Tompolo”, are believed to have been behind a series of strikes on pipelines in Delta state at the weekend. A court in Lagos last Thursday ordered his arrest on theft and money laund

Visafone acquisition, end for CDMA?

Image
IT  became official, January 5, 2016, that the last Nigerian Code Division Multiple Access, CDMA operator standing, Visafone, has finally succumbed to the terrible distress in that genre of telecommunications operation and allowed itself to be swallowed by a GSM counterpart, MTN Nigeria. However, when  Vanguard  carried the news eight months earlier that the CDMA operator may soon melt into another, it was quickly and unofficially, dismissed as a rumour by both players. But today, MTN has admitted that  the acquisition falls in line with the company’s determination to improve the quality of broadband services for its subscribers. According to MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, the acquisition is also a reflective of MTN’s concerted efforts to deepen the growth and rollout of broadband services across the country in support of the National Broadband Plan for the benefit of Nigerians. Visafone is one of the leading CDMA operators in Nigeria offering a number of services including voice, h
