The Education Rights Campaign, ERC, Abuja chapter, has condemned the continued suspension of students’ union activities at the University of Abuja and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, by the institutions’ managements. Condemning the imposition on students the so-called transition committees allegedly composed of handpicked students, Coordinator, ERC FCT Abuja Chapter, Akande Daniel Babatunde, called on the managements of both institutions to respect the democratic and fundamental human rights of their students by allowing them to freely operate independent students unionism. CALABAR—The Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old 400-level student in his office was yesterday suspended by the panel instituted by the school’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ivara Esu. Professor Ndifon, who is the first professor of Law from Cross River State, was briefly arrested and detained by the police and later released on Wednesday before he was suspended yesterday evening by the panel set up to investigate him. The professor was accused by mother of the victim, Mrs. Irene Akpan, in a letter sent to the university, alleging that the incident happened between 3 and 5pm on August 29 at the dean’s private office on the top floor of the faculty building. The authorities of the University of Ilorin reportedly prevented 35 candidates, mostly female from taking part in the post- UTME screening over indecent dressing. It was gathered that the candidates had assembled at the centre designated for the computer based (CBT) test at the permanent site of the University when officials in charge of the test turned them back on account of their dressing considered not decent enough. The authorities of the University, had in an advertorial before the commencement of the test, set guidelines for prospective candidates, one of which compels candidates to dress decently to the examination venue. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) says it is not considering adopting a Computer- Based Test (CBT) mode for its examinations. Its Head, National Office, Mr Charles Eguridu, made the clarification at an interactive forum with the Education Correspondents on Thursday night in Abuja. Eguridu said it would amount to “intellectual dishonesty’’ for him to say that the council would introduce CBT in the next five years or the near future.
