PORT HARCOURT—THE Federal Government
has been commended for coming up with the amnesty
programme for youths in the Niger Delta, as it was a
better approach to achieving peace in the region when
compared to the use of force.
Speaking at the public presentation of the findings of a
study on post amnesty Niger Delta conflict management
framework by the Faculty of Social Sciences,
University of Port Harcourt, Dean of the Faculty,
Professor Henry Alapiki, said insurgency declined in
the region with the introduction of the amnesty
programme.
He noted, however, that some of the issues that gave
rise to militancy in the region had not been addressed,
stressing that the issues, among which were
unemployment, poverty and inequality are capable of
triggering another round of crisis in the region.
He appealed to the Federal Government to take urgent
steps to tackle the challenges of unemployment in the
region and other related issues.
