97 dead in Turkey twin bomb blast (photos)

97 people were killed and over 400 others injured after two powerful bombs went off near the main train station in Ankara, the Turkish capital this morning where a peace rally calling for an end to the renewed conflict between the Kurdish PKK organization and the Turkish government.




About 14,000 people were in the area as at the time of the explosion. Two suicide bombers are believed to have caused the blasts. Following the attack, for which no group has claimed responsibility, bodies lay in front of the station on Hipodrum Street and paramedics tended to the injured as a police helicopter circled overhead. Bodies strewn on sidewalks, with injured people lying on the ground.

Four killed in Burundi gun attack

At least four people were killed on Friday when gunmen ambushed the Burundian army’s chief of staff in a failed assassination attempt. According to a morgue source, three soldiers and three gunmen were killed in the early morning attack in the capital Bujumbura. The source said that an army pick-up brought four bodies to the morgue. However, the main target Gen. Prime Niyongabo survived the attack. Niyongabo is the highest-ranking official to be targeted in a series of attacks on officials since April when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he was seeking a third term. Nkurunziza’s relection bid continue to raise tension as the opposition says it will violate the constitution and a peace deal that ended an ethnically charged civil war in 2005. Gunmen believed to be kidnappers this afternoon kidnapped Krinpere Douglas, a cousin to Timipre Sylva, the APC Governorship candidate for Bayelsa governorship election. According to Nathan Egba, the Director for Media and Publicity of Sylva’s campaign who made this known to newsmen, Douglas was kidnapped along the Ogbia-Brass waterways this afternoon as he was heading to a political rally in support of his cousin, Mr. Sylva. ''The victim was coming for this campaign but, unfortunately, their boat which was in our convoy was attacked by the gunmen who abducted him to an unknown destination. I pray that nothing will happen to him ,'' he said
