NUNG NDEM — THE PEOPLE of Nung Ndem clan, Onna Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, have bemoaned supposed marginalization of the tribe in the distribution of political positions in the local government, saying it was their turn to produce the next chair of the council Residents, who spoke to Niger Delta Voice, bemoaned that the clan had never produced the local government chair since the current political dispensation started in 1999, whereas Awa and Oniong clans had taken several turns.
It’s inequitable – Eno
Clan head of Nung Ndem, Etebom Akpa Eno, said it was unfair for only Awa and Oniong clans to cling to political leadership of the area, while Nung Ndem clan had not taken one turn. He asserted, “The people of this clan are united in their decision to see that the next chairmanship position of Onna Local Government Area comes from this clan.
For a long time, Awa and Oniong clans have relegated us to the background; they have been occupying all the political positions allocated to Onna Local Government Area since 1999 when this current democratic government started.” “There are three clans in Onna Local Government Area. Currently Awa clan has the state governor in the person of our son, Deacon Udom Gabriel Emmanuel.
In addition, the State and National Assembly members are from Awa, the state director of protocol and so on, while Oniong clan has the state commissioner for works and a couple of other positions, but Nung Ndem clan has nothing,” he said.
Eno asserted, “This is most unfair and this is the reason we are sticking out our neck this time to see that the post of the local government chairman comes to us. Nobody from this clan has occupied the local government chairmanship position since 1999 and so we feel justified in every sense to stake our claim to the position this time.”
