NAFDAC Closes illegal Chinese Factory Producing Mosquito Coil in Kano

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed up a Chinese company involved in the production of unregistered mosquito coils in Kano.
The coils are sold to the public under the brand name: “Wavetide: Plant Fiber Mosquito Coil” and are sold in most of the markets in the state.

Pharmacist Ake Ayodele Paul, NAFDAC’s Chief Regulation Officer, told reporters in Kano on Wednesday that the company was initially sealed on 28th of September, 2015, adding that its management had since declined to register the product with NAFDAC despite an invitation for them to regularize the production.

Ayodele, who heads the Enforcement and Investigation Unit of NAFDAC, said that NAFDAC has no way of knowing whether the chemicals used by the firm is harmful or not since the product has not been registered.

“We tried to check the chemicals and we discovered that the chemicals were labeled in Chinese. So, as an agency, there is no way we could tell whether the chemicals were poisonous or not.”

“We even asked them to give us the details of the chemicals used for the production of the coils, but they did not seem to have enough proficiency in English to analyze the chemical components of the coils they were manufacturing.”

“They told us that they were using one chemical, but we saw that some of these chemicals were green; some of them were in blue containers and in yellow containers… They claimed to be producing the coils in China whereas it is produced in Dakata here in Kano.”

“For you to be producing an item here in Kano, with no [English] signboard outside your compound but choose to bear a Chinese address, certainly you are not doing something right.”

He charged the public to insist on NAFDAC’s registration number before they buy or consume any product.
